Bad Gastein in Austria is one of the more exclusive ski resorts in the Alps, with five mountains, four separate ski areas, and plenty of challenging runs. There are a lot of very luxurious restaurants, hotels, and chalets in Bad Gastein, largely because of the town's history as a spa resort, and the off-slope facilities are some of the best in the Alpine region. Bad Gastein ski chalets are a far cry from the more basic affairs you will find on most ski resorts, with state of the art facilities and five star levels of comfort and hospitality.
The resort is best suited to confident intermediate skiers, with lots of long and challenging red runs, as well as some great cruising and carving opportunities in the Schlossalm sector. It is a lot more snowsure than most other low-altitude Austrian resorts, due to the mainly North-facing slopes, and the high-altitude Sportgastein area serves as a good back-up for when snow is in short supply on the lower slopes. It is worth noting that Bad Gastein doesn't have a particularly developed public transport system, so it is a good idea to hire a car if you want to make the best of your time there.
